Longing For Long Lake
My best moments in youth were spent upon your waters. May I return sometime with sons and daughters. Some day soon over you the sun and moon, To arise once more to the sound of the loon. GPR PS: I have been to the jungle, the desert, the gulf and south pacific. In my eyes I have never seen greater beauty than Long Lake in Washburn County, just different.(More written from Grieg on Testimonial page)

Welcome to our web site! Feel free to look around and discover all the wonderful things Long Lake has to offer.
This picturesque 3,300 acre lake is located in the southeastern corner of Washburn County, Wisconsin. It stretches almost 19 miles and reaches depths of over 70 feet. Long Lake's sparkling clean spring fed water offers many recreational opportunities including fishing, swimming and boating, to name just a few.
Officially designated as the "Walleye Capital of Wisconsin" it's cool deep bays, gravel bars and rocky shorelines provide excellent walleye structure. It is also widely recognized as a productive year around fishery for many other species including large and small mouth bass, northern, bluegills and crappies. The villages of ice fishing shacks that appear each winter give testimony to the success of it's tip-up and jig pole anglers.
If you know the Long Lake area, you know of it's beauty and it's recreational possibilities. Long Lake is well known for it's fishing, water sports and pleasant vacation stays. If the area is new to you, this is a delightful place with which to become acquainted. Since it's "discovery" in the late 1800's as a logging site, development has been slow and controlled. Because of the excellent fishing and natural environment for year-round activities, visitors have been coming here regularly.
Long Lake is nestled in one of the most beautiful and relatively undeveloped areas in Wisconsin. Yet it has many fine resorts and restaurants and is freeway-close to shopping and activities in Rice Lake and Spooner. Tucked in amongst rocky shores and tree covered rolling hills, this spring fed, crystal clear body of water wanders over some nearly 3,300 acres. With an undulating, hooked shape having many bays, it's surface stretches over 16 miles creating 99 miles of scenic shoreline.
The area's natural landscapes were formed millions of years ago by glaciers and more recently (1800's) by the dam at the south end of the lake. The land is unique, with conifer and hardwood forests, spruce and tamarack bogs, free flowing rivers, rolling farmlands and jack pine barrens. The woods are full of wildflowers and berries and animals large and small. Deer and fox, muskrats and beavers - all are to be seen by the careful observer.
One can awaken to the sun glimmering on the lake and listen to the songs of the many different birds. Loons are heard and seen regularly, along with mallards, wood ducks, teal and other waterfowl. You can watch the bald eagle or osprey in flight. This is the natural habitat of the great blue heron, the pileated woodpecker, the red tailed hawk and the loggerhead shrike. Migrating birds stop here and songbirds abound.

At day's end sunsets are long and beautiful, with the lake reflecting every hue of the rainbow - from bright pinks to burning bronze. Because of the lack of city lights, the night skies are brilliant with stars and the Northern Lights often put on dazzling displays. At night throughout much of the year one can look skyward and observe their ever changing, dancing patterns.
The Long Lake area offers a variety of other activities including Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts and Butternut Hills, a lush 18 hole golf course overlooking the lake. Acres of forest land invite you to hike and explore. For the winter sports minded, there is Nordic Woods Trail, a groomed cross-country ski trail or many miles of marked, groomed snowmobile trails which cross the lake and connect to nearby areas.
The Long Lake Chamber of Commerce sponsors many activities for your enjoyment. A mid July antique and classic wood boat show, an early August sail boat race, raffles, bake sales, and dances are among the summer events. In February there is the Long Lake Ice Fishing Contest sponsored by the Chamber. Check with local businesses to see what's happening while you are visiting the area.
Spend a day on the lake - view the spectacular scenery on a leisurely pontoon boat ride, wade along the shore or just swing your feet off the dock and enjoy the solitude of the peaceful natural environment. The area abounds with wildlife. During your stay you are apt to see bald eagles, loons, herons, osprey, ducks, otters, deer and raccoons. Savor the breathtaking sunsets as they reflect on the water, enjoy the countless miles of undisturbed natural shoreline, or perhaps witness a dazzling, dancing display of the Northern Lights on a warm summer night.
Long Lake is a lake for all seasons and many resorts offer fall and winter accommodations. The area offers miles of groomed cross country ski trails as well as snowmobile trails and, of course the ice fishing is great on Long Lake. The lake has access to the Tuscobia and Wild Rivers snowmobile super trails.
There are several culinary establishments around the lake that offer anything from burgers and pizza to gourmet selections.
Wilderness hiking is located nearby along the Birchwood Fire Lane Wilderness Area, a vast wooded area set aside for foot travel only. Canoeing opportunities are available on the Loyhead Lake Primitive Canoe Route and the Sawmill Lake Primitive Canoe Route all located a short distance from Long Lake.
The Chamber is also active in the Washburn County "Adopt - A - Highway" program. Our area of responsibility is the more than 13 miles of county road that serves the lake. This involves picking up trash and other debris along the highway twice yearly in the spring and again in the fall.
The area is now served by The Long Lake First Responders. These dedicated volunteers are part of the 911/EMS system in Washburn county and are directed by Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake. When a 911 call is received this group is dispatched along with the ambulance crews and are usually the first to arrive at the emergency, fully trained and equipped to meet the challenge.
