| Weigh your car at home |
Getting your car to exactly 5 ounces is key for a fast race. To weigh your car, you can build a simple scale out of:
1 piece of light metal rod or wooden dowel approximately 26" long
2 plastic bags
52 pennies
Some thin string or thread.
To build the scale, center the thread/string on the rod, and get it to balance.
Put some tape on the string to hold it in the correct spot on the rod.
Attach two bags with string to the ends of the rod (I used alligator clips), make sure rod/bag system still balances.
Put 52 pennies in one bag, and your car in the other, adjust the car weight until it is in balance.
If possible, weigh your car at the Post Office, Butcher or grocery store.
Why 52 pennies?
According to data from the US mint, pennies minted after 1982 weigh 2.5 grams
There are 28.35 grams per ounce, thus
(28.35 * 5) / 2.5 = 56.7 pennies
But because of dirt, corrosion, lint, use 52 pennies for you best guess weight.
It is much easier to put weight on your car then to remove it.
Trust me on this one, use 52 pennies!
